Literacy Programs for Children

Metropolitan Library System offers books and programs at locations throughout the Metro.

Early Birds offers free quarterly classes for parents through Smart Start Central Oklahoma. Early Birds is a family-based, school readiness program that provides parents with information, activities, and materials for a young child.

Rainbow Fleet Resource Center offers a childcare referral service. They also offer books, games, and toys for checkout from their resource library for only $40/year.

Summer Reading Programs

Freedom School OKC in NE OKC offers a free summer enrichment program that meets 5 days per week from 8:00 AM – 2:30 PM of reading instruction  and enrichment activities. Class sizes are no larger than 12.  Meals included. Located at the MetroTech Springlake campus. Contact Amy Brooks-Young at (405) 924-3143.

The Oklahoma Youth Literacy Program in SE OKC offers a summer enrichment program for students starting from Pre-K Monday-Friday from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m, $45 weekly. Reading session is free to attend. Multi-child discount available. Field trips, scholarships and before/after care available. Call (405)-822-9900 to register.

Project Transformation  in NW OKC offers a faith-based 8 week program starting in late May to late July that includes literacy instruction and activities through five programs that are available to students from elementary to young adults. Jubilee Partners in central OKC offers a free faith-based summer reading camp in June and July, Monday-Thursday for children to excel in academics, improve social skills, and more throughout the summer months. Free to students that attend Title 1 schools. Call Kristen Donovan to register at (405) 888-1271.

Restore OKC in NE OKC offers a free faith-based two session summer reading camp Tuesday and Thursday afternoons for students. First session for grades K – 3rd is held at Thelma Parks Elementary, second for grades 4th – 6th at Crystal Lake.  For more information, contact Caylee Dodson at (405) 642-0886.

Summer Reading Skills Programs for Children and Adults – OU The University of Oklahoma Outreach offers a 6-8 week reading remediation courses that meet once a week for early education to adult ranging from $244-$372. Locations are throughout the metro. To reserve a place in the program, call 1 (800) 964-8888.

Positive Tomorrows in downtown OKC free for students to receive three meals per day, medical care, and more  to help families in the homeless community. A range of activities include academics, fitness, and field trips for students from elementary to 7th grade. Contact Erika Kennedy at (405) 556-5082.

ReadOKC initiative is free within OKC Public Schools for students to read 20 minutes a day. Students who meet this reading goal will be eligible for prizes and recognition.
